Fried milkshakes are a thing and you know you’re intrigued
If there’s anything we’ve learned from state/county fair season, it’s that all foods are friable — even liquids. This holds true for one restaurant in Preston, Lancashire in the UK. At Mister Eaters Fish and Chips, milkshakes aren’t just for drinking — they’re also for eating.
John Clarkson is the fried culinary mastermind behind Mister Eaters’ vast selection of unusual fried options. Aside from deep fried burgers, deep fried kebabs and deep fried alcohol (among soooo many more), Clarkson’s deep fried milkshake, which he has named the “chipshake”, is the newest addition to the restaurant’s options of all things deep fried. The chipshake was inspired by the Spanish dish Leche Frita, which is made by creating dough out of milk and flour. We’re automatically signed up for anything that includes dough, milk, and flour.
To make the chipshakes, Clarkson mixes milkshake powder with milk, eggs, flour and sugar (duh), freezes the mixture in an ice cube tray, coats each cube in batter and then dips them in a fryer for two minutes. And then out comes a crispy ball of battered, oozy vanilla, chocolate or strawberry milkshake. The milkshake mixture in the middle turns into a light custard texture, and all is right in the world.
Clarkson has been running the restaurant since 1989, and has experimented with countless foods. “We have done a lot of things with burgers and fast food so we thought we would do something completely different,” he told Daily Mail. “Nobody has ever deep-fried milk like this, and certainly not milkshake, so I wanted to give it a go.” Customers can’t seem to get enough of the milkshake bites since Clarkson started selling them. They got for 65p each or three for £1.70 (the cholesterol is included for free). “You would expect it to melt or fall to bits but it doesn’t and they’re actually delicious,” Clarkson said. “I let some customers try them as samples and they have been coming back to have them as dessert. Their first reaction was, ‘what!?’ They think I’m daft as a brush. They say I’m the Willy Wonka of the chip shop trade, which is quite funny. I’ve had this shop for a long time and it can be quite laborious, so I like to do things to keep the job fun.”
So, if you’re in the Lancashire area, and regular milkshakes just aren’t satisfying your sweet tooth, you might as well drop in for a chipshake at Mister Eaters. Each square contains around 500 calories though, so ingest at your own risk!
