Sony is reportedly dropping Dr. Luke over Kesha allegations

Kesha’s struggle to free herself of a contract with producer Dr. Luke, who allegedly abused her over the course of her pop career, has finally taken a positive turn — she and Dr. Luke’s label, Sony Music, has reportedly cut ties with Dr. Luke.

A full recap of Kesha’s legal battles can be found here, but in brief, the pop star has been fighting to get out of her contract with Dr. Luke, the producer who first signed her when she was 18 and then allegedly began to physically and emotionally abuse her. A court injunction that would’ve allowed her to record without Dr. Luke’s influence in her life was denied a few weeks back, and the uproar over that announcement inspired fans and the media to rally around the #FreeKesha slogan.

The news that Sony is going to cut ties with Dr. Luke will hopefully allow Kesha to begin recording again. Because of her previous contract with Dr. Luke, which was thought to severely limit her performing and recording abilities and subject her to his constant presence in her artistic work, Kesha had been effectively barred from continuing her pop career.

Since the court injunction decision in late February, many of Kesha’s fellows in the music industry have spoken up for her, including megastar (and Sony labelmate) Adele. In a statement to The Wrap, a source familiar with Sony revealed:

Updated on March 9, 5:40 PM EST: An attorney for Dr. Luke has released a statement to Entertainment Weekly regarding the Sony rumors: “This is not true. Luke has an excellent relationship with Sony. His representatives are in regular contact with executives at the highest levels at Sony and this has never come up.”
