This guy just won free tuition with an amazing basketball shot

Everyone’s familiar with scholarships. There come in all different forms — merit-based, athletic, etc. — and can cover anything from a few hundred dollars all the way up to full-ride. Anyone who has dealt with the headache of figuring out just how to pay for college knows the drill, but I bet you haven’t seen anything like this.

On Thursday night, incoming Ball State University freshman Lem Turner was randomly selected to attempt a half-court shot during a freshman pep rally at the Worthen Arena. What was he shooting for? His tuition. Specifically, free tuition for a semester if he landed this nearly-impossible shot.

And land it he did. Students took the phrase “the crowd goes wild” to a new level as everyone jumped, cheered and embraced to celebrate this awesome move that had only ever been accomplished at Ball State once before in 2013.

Take a look at the video below (Warning: You might want to turn down your volume).

But the amazement didn’t stop there. Students and alumni alike took to Twitter continue expressing their disbelief, excitement and joy:

What better way to kick off your college career than by getting a few extra thousand dollars in your pocket? I don’t know what Turner’s college plans are, but I bet the Ball State basketball team would welcome him with open arms!
