The Disney Channel is rebooting “Freaky Friday” — as a musical

Talk about a throwback. It’s now been 14 years since Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis starred opposite one another in the 2003 Disney film Freaky Friday. Before that, Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster starred in the 1976 version of the movie. And now, the Disney Channel is bringing Freaky Friday back once again — this time, as Freaky Friday the musical.

The movie, which most of us are familiar with, tells the story of a mother-daughter duo who are constantly at odds. And so, as a way for them to better understand one another, some ancient Chinese magic (by way of a fortune cookie in the 2003 version) turns their lives upside down and the pair switch bodies.

Now, Disney Channel is bringing back this fan-favorite classic in musical form — and we could not be more excited. According to Playbill, the TV musical will include Broadway star Heidi Blickenstaff as Katherine (a role she played in the Freaky Friday stage adaptation) and Dolphin Tale’s Cozi Zuehlsdorff as her daughter, Ellie.

While this story has been revamped several times, the same underlying message remains. When those with conflicting views can’t see eye-to-eye, sometimes it’s time put yourself in someone else’s position. In this case, that happens quite literally for the mother-daughter duo, who end up strengthening their bond in spite of their unbelievable circumstances.

A tale of family, friendship, and happy endings, this is one reboot — in addition to the recent announcement that Hocus Pocus is making a comeback — that we can’t wait to see.
