This fraternity is supporting women and fighting sexism, one sign at a time
Remember earlier this week, when that fraternity hung up some seriously sexist banners on their private off-campus housing? If not, let us give you a refresher: the Sigma Nu fraternity at Virginia’s Old Dominion University (ODU) reminded us that misogyny is still alive and well when they draped signs that said “Rowdy and Fun, Hope Your Baby Girl Is Ready For A Good Time,” “Freshman Daughter Drop Off,” and “Go Ahead And Drop Mom Off Too.” Ugh, ugh, UGH.
The signs — and the students behind them — have been receiving a ton of backlash. While some are claiming that it’s just a harmless joke, others are pointing out that the signs are making light of sexual assault on campus — a very real and rampant issue for many colleges. The fraternity has since been put on interim suspension. “While we constantly educate students, faculty and staff about sexual assault and sexual harassment,” ODU president John Broderick said in a statement, “this incident confirms our collective efforts are still failing to register with some.”
However, proving that not all frats are terrible, in response to the ODU situation—and in support of their female co-eds— other fraternities have been hanging up signs to highlight that demeaning treatment of women will not stand in their chapters. According to the Marlin Chronicle, a student-run newspaper at Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC), the Sigma Nu chapter of the college recently displayed a fab banner of their own. “Rowdy And Fun?” the sign read. “Nah. . . Respect And Fidelity.” YES. Now this is a sign we can get behind.
VWC’s Sigma Nu chapter also posted another sign, “Honor And Equality” and posted pictures of each to their Facebook page. “In response to current events the Iota Beta chapter has made its own signs in defense of the values of our great fraternity,” the fraternity wrote on their Facebook. “Brick and tape. . . when in doubt always use more tape,” they added jokingly.
