These news hosts got really mad “Wonder Woman” isn’t American enough, and we have some news for them

Wonder Woman is a dominating force this weekend at the box office, as powerful as the Amazonian heroine herself. The Warner Bros. movie, directed by Patty Jenkins, has had a record-tying 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It could make history for being the biggest opening of all time for a female director with an estimated $100 million or more at the box office.

Even more amazing? Wonder Woman has little girls dressing up as their hero, eager to soak in all that #girlpower.

However, commentators at Fox News are criticizing the film and its superhero for a lack of American patriotism.

“I think, nowadays, sadly, money trumps patriotism, guest Dion Baia said during Friday’s episode of Your World with Neil Cavuto. “Especially, recently, I personally feel like we’re not really very patriotic, the country, in a certain sense. They want these movies to succeed internationally, so they’re going to dial back.

So how is Wonder Woman not patriotic enough? The key critique has come down to her costume.

This new Wonder Woman, played by Israeli actress Gal Gadot, is decked out in red, gold and blue. Red, white, gold, and blue festooned the original costume.

“I think the Hollywood aspect, we see this time and time again, it’s cool to hate America these days, Mike Gunzelman said.

This isn’t the first criticism against Wonder Woman’s supposed lack of patriotism. 

A New York Post article claims the new Wonder Woman “has nothing to do with America” and her costume has been “leached of all color.”

Gunzelman’s suggestion of an All-American film to see this weekend instead? Baywatch, a box office flop that scored 20 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

A costume alone does not a superhero (or successful film) make, as we’ve clearly seen from the surging support for Wonder Woman this weekend. Gadot may have said it best why everyone is flocking to see the newest DC Comics badass.

“She is the ultimate symbol of strength, Gadot said in 2015. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d grow up to be in a movie playing someone who influenced as many women as she has.

There’s a few issues with the “not American” critique of Wonder Woman, just so you know.

First of all, and this should be obvious, WONDER WOMAN ISN’T AMERICAN. She’s an Amazon raised on the island of Themyscira, so…not the US.

Second of all, why is there a need for all superheroes to be patriotic, or even connected to the US Government? While the characters may have been invented in America, there’s no reason they need to be American.

Heroism is about action, not national origin.

Wonder Woman is now in theaters.
