‘Forever’ got cancelled, and Ioan Gruffudd’s response is breaking our hearts
Bad news, Forever fans. . . It turns out that “forever” sometimes just means just “one season” (we know, we know, WOMP WOMP). The supernatural drama, which aired on ABC, was about a 200-year-old medical examiner named Dr. Henry Morgan who has Sherlockian detective skills and studies the dead to help solve criminal cases. But after one season, it’s been cancelled. . . and star Ioan Gruffudd, who played Morgan, is taking it hard.
His wife, Alice Evans, took to Twitter recently to break the bad news. “It’s brutal, but that’s show business,” she tweeted. She also spoke for Ioan, explaining that her husband is “shaken” but wants to express his appreciation for the “wonderful, loving fans who made the whole experience so magic.”
But it wasn’t on Twitter where Ioan reached out to his fans, because his beautifully heartbreaking message needed more than just the allotted 140 characters. A few hours later, Ioan posted on Instagram, addressing his message to his “dear friends, fans, and supporters.”
“Tonight, as you all now know, I received a phone call that I was hoping not to receive, and to be honest I really wasn’t expecting it,” Ioan wrote. The numbers hadn’t been amazing, he explained, but he thought the show’s “incredible fan base” would keep it afloat. “But sadly no, this time the cards weren’t dealt in our favor,” Ioan continued. “Show business is like that. Hell, life is like that. You ride to the top of the wave and then you come crashing down again.”
But when Ioan read the tweets of support, he was able to see the bright side, he explained. “I was overcome by a sense of gratitude,” Ioan wrote. “To have met you all and to have you all rooting for me and the show. At having a chance to play the role of my dreams, even if it was only for a year. To have been given the chance to bring Henry to life.”
And that’s when Ioan really made us tear up: he thanked his fans for their endless support in the best way possible. “It was you guys who held me up when I thought I could no longer go on. . . You made me smile when you pointed out the little things I did on screen that I thought had gone unnoticed. You gave me confidence when I accidentally found myself reading less than shining reviews. You were always with me, every step of the way, waving your flags, shouting your support for the show.”
Oh, our hearts. We know that this won’t be the last we’re seeing of Ioan Gruffudd and his incredible talent and passion. We love you, Ioan!
