J.J. Abrams just debunked this popular Rey theory from “Star Wars: Force Awakens” and we’re bummed

For the past year, there’s been one big Stars Wars question on our minds: Who are Rey’s parents?

For such a strong Force-sensitive individual, Rey must have super Force-sensitive parents, and it’s hard not to draw the conclusion that she might be the daughter of Luke Skywalker. Or Princess Leia and Han Solo. Or even Obi-Wan Kenobi! Lots and lots of Rey fan theories came out of Force Awakens, and many of them are very good, but in the end, only one can be right (…or they’re all simply wrong). And now, Force Awakens’ director, J.J. Abrams, has weighed in on the debate, and just debunked one popular theory:

Sorry, friends, but Rey and Kylo Ren have never met before, and that means they’re probably (*probably*) not related.

The Force Awakens Special Edition on Blu-Ray 3D will be out later this month, but a few lucky souls have already gotten their hands on an advanced copy of the movie ([raises hand and whispers] I got one). Abrams provides some insightful commentary through the entire film, and when Rey and Kylo Ren meet for the first time (on the planet Takodana, during the raid on Maz’s castle) Abrams notes:

“[Rey and Kylo Ren have] never met but he’s heard of this girl. And so, now comes a moment when their meeting is inevitable.”

And with that, we can throw all our fan theories out the window about Rey and Kylo being related. We can also throw all those theories about, “the two trained together as young Jedi, maybe under Luke Skywalker,” along with the fact that maybe Kylo spared Rey’s life earlier in life.

So, it looks like we’re back to the theories drawing board.
