‘The Force Awakens”s opening night totally beat ‘Harry Potter”s

Hey, have you heard about the new Star Wars movie that just opened? Of course you have. It’s EVERYWHERE, including now in theaters. Hundreds and thousands of fans flocked to the movies Thursday night to catch early showings of The Force Awakens. So many caught a 7 p.m., 10 p.m., or midnight showing, in fact, that this newest Star Wars saga installment just dethroned Harry Potter as the top-grossing Thursday night film ever.

So sorry, Harry.

Back in 2011, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 earned the top Thursday spot. The last installment of HP pulled in $43.5 million on Thursday, went on to earn $91.1 for its official Friday opening, and $169.2 million all together opening weekend. The Force Awakens is on track to break all of those records, and then some.

With a whopping $57 million in Thursday night ticket sales, Force Awakens now sits at the top of the Thursday night chart. If that’s not enough, it’s already crossed the $100 million mark in advanced ticket sales — meaning people who bought their ticket way ahead of time, like in October. Now think about all the people who didn’t buy advanced tickets, and are still going to head to the theater this weekend to see it (and probably find sold out shows, get there early).

There’s also another record Star Wars could break this weekend. Earlier this year, Jurassic World snagged the highest-grossing opening weekend ever, with $208.8 million. We’ve got three days to find out if Star Wars can beat that, and it’s chances look good. The Force is strong with it, you know.
