FLOTUS and POTUS talk about their 2015 faves
As the new year draws closer, we’re all making lists of our favorite things about 2015, and our President and First Lady are no exceptions. They recently sat down for an exclusive interview with People for a Campaign 2016 special feature, and they talked about all their 2015 faves, from music to moments.
So what tunes were rocking the White House this year? And what movies topped the Obamas’ list of must-sees? Set your eyeballs on the list below, and see how your picks match up with those of the FLOTUS and the POTUS.
Books
FLOTUS
The FLOTUS pick for book of the year is The Light of the World, Elizabeth Alexander’s best-selling memoir about her marriage and her husband’s sudden, tragic death. It’s a very personal read that brings all the feels, from blissful joy to aching heartbreak.
POTUS
The President’s pick, Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff, has also been named the #1 book of the year by Amazon’s editorial team. It explores a marriage from different perspectives. Are we the only ones who find it super-sweet that both of the Obamas chose books about marriage as their favorites? Surely we’re not. #relationshipgoals
Music
FLOTUS
The First Lady’s pick for song of the year is “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, and we have to say… AGREED. But can she do the choreography from the video?? Something tells us yes, she undoubtably can.
POTUS
The President’s fave song of 2015 is Kendrick Lamar’s “How Much A Dollar Cost,” which is actually a pretty good choice considering he’s the guy (kinda) in charge of our country’s economy. He really needs to know the worth of a dollar. Just saying.
Movies
FLOTUS
Michelle Obama is just like all of us, guys, because she loved Inside Out! What’s not to love, amirite? Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader…and the list goes on. So much awesome, all wrapped up in Pixar magic.
POTUS
The POTUS pick for best movie of 2015 is The Martian. Again, a solid choice. There’s lots of NASA business in The Martian. (With the added benefit of Matt Damon, of course.)
TV Shows
FLOTUS
We love our First Lady’s sense of humor, as evidenced by her pick for top TV show of the year: Blackish.
POTUS
The President’s fave show is more on the serious side. The Knick stars Clive Owen and is a gritty drama about medical care for the poor at Knickerbocker Hospital in the early 1900s.
Moments
FLOTUS
The First Lady said her favorite moments of 2015 were spent with young people, from her visits to schools and military bases to hanging out with kids at the White House. She told People, “I once spent some time with girls at a school in Cambodia, and one of them read me a poem she had written about Let Girls Learn, our initiative to help girls worldwide go to school. It was beautiful – I was trying so hard not to cry!”
POTUS
In keeping with the marriage theme, the President said one of his favorite moments of the year was “the gathering outside the White House following the Supreme Court ruling upholding the right of same sex couples to marry.” We have to agree. That one still makes us cry because #lovewins!
He also cited his upcoming appearance on Bear Grylls’ Running Wild as one of his favorite memories from 2015. The episode is set to air on December 17 on NBC and the President told People it was quite a meaningful experience for him because, “The landscape was breathtaking, and so were the very real effects of climate change, which become hard to ignore when the ice is melting into your hands. I thought it was important to talk about protecting the only planet we have, but I never thought I’d be Running Wild with Bear Grylls.” I have to admit, I’m a little jelly. I mean, I’d love to run wild with Bear. (Call me, Bear Grylls. Seriously.)
We love this little peek into how the Obamas spend 2015. And it kind of makes us wonder what kind of awesomeness is in store for 2016! Bring. It. On.
