The flip phone is coming back into our lives
Despite how much we love (or rely on) smart phones, sometimes it’s hard not to miss the good old days of flip phones. They were sturdy, low-maintenance, and the buttons made that super gratifying clicky sound as you were typing out texts. Sure, they weren’t fancy, but they got the job done! And LG wants to make our nostalgic dreams come true with an all new flip phone that just might give us the best of both the smart phone and the “dumb” phone.
Gentle, which was announced by LG yesterday, looks a lot like the flip phones of yore. The clamshell case and buttons are straight out of the mid-2000s. But the phone runs Android apps, giving you access to the web without sacrificing that retro design.
Does that look take you right back to senior year or what?
Of course, there are draw backs. By design the phone is smaller than your average flip phone, so that it can easily fit in your pocket. That means it has only a 3.2 inch display, powered by a 1.1GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM. There’s also a camera (3-megapixels) and 4GB of internal storage. So the specs ain’t great, but it will let you do what you gotta do … assuming you don’t have to do too much.
But the plus side of all that is the battery life — it should last for days with so little going on behind the scenes.
LG is releasing the phone on a “test run” in South Korea, hoping that users will appreciate the small size and nostalgic appeal of an old-school cell phone. And although it’s hard to say whether Gentle will find its customer base, we are pretty into the idea of bringing back the flip phone. Smart phones are insanely huge these days, and sometimes you just need a phone that works like a … well … phone!
