This fitness star’s three photos prove that prove that the number on your scale is meaningless
Sometimes, especially when we’re working REALLY HARD to get in better shape, we use weight as a barometer for our progress. However, losing weight is complicated. And even though we might be getting healthier, that number on the scale won’t always drop as we expect it to. If you’re currently beating yourself up over this, fitness star Kelsey Wells is here to show you the light – because yesterday, she shared an Instagram post that will make you see your bathroom scale as you’ve never seen it before.
In an inspiring post discovered by Cosmopolitan, Kelsey (of the blog My Sweat Life) explained how her fitness journey has changed the way she looks at her weight. You’ll see below that, while she may appear much more toned in the third photo than in the first, she is only five pounds lighter!
Kelsey explained:
“PLEASE STOP THINKING YOUR WEIGHT EQUALS YOUR PROGRESS AND FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING PLEASE STOP LETTING YOR WEIGHT HAVE ANY AFFECT WHATSOEVER ON YOUR SELF ESTEEM, like I used to.”
Yass, preach! Now let’s continue…
“To any of you who are where I once was, please listen to me. I am 5′ 7” and weigh 140 lbs. When I first started #bbg [Bikini Body Guide] I was 8 weeks post partum and 145 lbs,” Kelsey revealed. “I weighed 130 before getting pregnant, so based on nothing besides my own warped perception, I decided my ‘goal weight’ should be 122 [so I could] fit into my skinniest jeans.”
After several months of using the Bikini Body Guide and breastfeeding her son, Kelsey reached her goal weight and was able to wear her size 0 jeans once again. However, she’s gained 18 pounds since that time, has gone up two pant sizes, and has also ripped her skinny jeans wide open when she later attempted to pull them up over her knees. Yet, based on her current physique, you wouldn’t think that this was the case.
“According to my old self and flawed standards, I would be failing miserably. THANK GOODNESS I finally learned to start measuring my progress by things that matter – strength, ability, endurance, health, and HAPPINESS.”
By changing the way she sees her weight, Kelsey now feels healthier than ever. Though she may not be her goal weight, she has more muscle and less body fat than she did before. Overall, this completely changed Kelsey’s body composition while making her feel more comfortable in her own skin.
Kelsey concluded by explaining that she now subscribes to a new set of standards, ones that involve this empowering mantra: “SCREW THE SCALE.”
We’re now writing these three words down on a piece of paper, so we can tape it to our bathroom mirror ASAP.
