The first trailer for Disney’s live-action Aladdin is here, and it will give you chills

Last night, October 11th, Disney released the first teaser for its upcoming live-action Aladdin, and the film looks like it’s going to be one hell of a (magic carpet) ride. While the minute-and-a-half long teaser doesn’t reveal too many details from the upcoming feature, it does give us our very first look at the stunning kingdom of Agrabah and, of course, a glimpse of Mena Massoud as the beloved titular street rat-turned-prince.
Setting the scene for the film, the teaser features sweeping shots of the fictional kingdom, courtesy of Iago—who, despite rumors, is appearing in the movie—before settling in on the Cave of Wonders. Just like in the animated movie, we’re warned that only the “diamond in the rough” can enter the cave.
The teaser ends with a shot of Aladdin reaching out for the iconic lamp.

To really get us in the Aladdin spirit, the teaser also features a gorgeous, haunting instrumental medley of songs from the 1992 animated classic (if that shot of Aladdin picking up the lamp set to a slowed-down rendition of “Friend Like Me” didn’t give you chills, you may need to see a doctor).
While we would have loved to get just one shot of Will Smith as Genie, we know Disney’s saving that for a big reveal. The film also stars actress Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, both of whom were also sorely missed from the teaser.
The teaser’s release came just one day after Disney dropped its new poster for the movie:
While some of Disney’s upcoming live-action films—namely Mulan—are making large departures from their animated counterparts, it appears the Guy Ritchie-helmed Aladdin is more or less sticking to the original story. However, Ritchie did make one major (and controversial) addition with the character of Prince Anders, a rival suitor for Jasmine’s affections, played by Game Night actor Billy Magnussen.
Disney’s live-action Aladdin is set to take us to a whole new world on May 24th, 2019.
