The very first Taco Bell is being preserved for posterity
Would you like a historical landmark to go with your 7 Layer Burrito? Every fast food chain had to start somewhere and for Taco Bell, the home of your deep, dark late night cravings, the start was on Firestone Boulevard in Downey, CA, a city in southeast Los Angeles county.
Los Angeles Magazine reports that the original Taco Bell building, built in 1962, was on the chopping block until the Taco Bell corporation got wind of things and stepped in to save it. But not in the way you think.
The location was closed in 1986 and last year owners of the site where Taco Bell #1 sits announced plans to re-develop the land — which would mean clearing everything that was already there. The original Taco Bell was slated for demolition, but luckily the Taco Bell corporation have save the day and are moving the building 45 miles north to their headquarters in Irvine, CA.
Southern California Taco Bell lovers can go to restaurants designated “watch points” along the way to spot the original building being moved, which is a pretty cool thing to have as a side order with your original style crispy tacos! Spot it rolling through Downey, Norwalk, Cerritos, and through Orange County, until it lands at 1 Glen Bell Way in Irvine. Olé!
