Just keep swimming! Here’s what we know about ‘Finding Dory’

No one loves Dory more than Ellen DeGeneres. She campaigned hard for a sequel to 2003’s Finding Nemo, and brought up its lack of sequel thousands of times on her daytime talk show. Needless to say, it was only fitting that she herself got to make the OFFICIAL Finding Nemo sequel announcement, and even better, the movie is all going to be all about Dory.

DeGeneres was on hand at D23 Expo Friday night to help make even MORE announcements about the new movie. Finding Dory isn’t going to be another search and rescue mission; instead, we’re going to get to the bottom of Dory’s backstory.

Andrew Stanton (who also directed Nemo) told the crowd that he believed the story about Nemo, Marlin, and Dory was done. But then, according to Entertainment Weekly, he “wanted to know that if this charming forgetful fish ever got lost again, that she would be okay… at the end of Finding Nemo, I wasn’t confident about that.”

In the movie, Dory is going to remember that she forgot about her parents. Something tells her that she should head for California, so her, Marlin and Nemo set off on an adventure across the big, blue world to find them. They come across a scientific facility where injured ocean animals are treated, and then returned back into the wild. D23 announced a bunch big names who will be playing the animals inside this facility, like Ed O’Neil playing Hank the Octopus; Ty Burrell playing Bailey, who sounds like a hypochondriac beluga whale; and Kaitlin Olson playing a whale shark named Destiny. And don’t forget Albert Brooks, who returns to voice Marlin.

A short clip of the movie was shown at D23, and though it’s not available online (WHY, DISNEY, WHY?), but Variety describes that we’re going to see lots of Dory “sleep-swimming,” along with the triumphant return of whale-speak, too.

However, it’s still going to take a while for Dory to swim our way. Finding Dory splashes into theaters on June 17, 2016.
