Soooo that weird ‘Fight Club’ Tinder app turned out to be a hoax
Sometimes when things sound too crazy to be true, they are. Turns out Rumblr, the Fight Club-esque app that promised to match people up with other people looking for a fight (think Tinder, but for…well, fighting. Yeah. Yikes) was a hoax. Let’s all just breathe a collective sigh of relief that this was not a real thing.
The app got a huge amount of media coverage in advance of its anticipated launch on November 9. As it turns out, the app was built by a creative consulting agency called von Hughes. Why? To bring attention to the company and their unique set of skills.
The company released a statement, explaining that the app was meant to help von Hughes launch, calling it “a funny idea amongst a group of friends” that turned into “an opportunity to showcase our branding skills.”
So this self-described “team of college dropouts with backgrounds in marketing, design, and engineering” created a hoax that fooled a huge number of blogs and old media sites, creating a calling card for themselves where their first idea is a fighting app. Interesting tack to take, eh? It was attention-grabbing and bold, but was it the right kind of bold?
For disappointed consumers, they offer these words: “We understand that some of you were genuinely looking forward to using an app like Rumblr, and we’re sorry to disappoint. However, if you still are truly wishing to release some built-up angst, consider fighting more pressing issues such as gang violence, domestic abuse, and at-risk youth culture.”
Now that’s solid advice we can get behind.
