Fifth Harmony are speaking out about the slut-shaming double standard

Oh, Fifth Harmony. What would we do without your truth bombs? The X-Factor-formed girl group spoke out about double standards in the fall issue of Cosmo For Latinas, specifically when it comes to slut-shaming. Slut-shaming is when someone insults or belittles someone for having sex or being sexual. It’s totally not okay, and as the group pointed out, it happens so much more to girls than it does to guys.

Lauren Jauregui explained:

We know exactly what you mean. This is a phenomena that we’re all too familiar with. Remember when nude pictures of Dylan Sprouse started making the rounds on the Internet? It’s a complete violation of privacy, but all he had to do was make a joke about it on Twitter and the whole situation was brushed off as no big deal. People thought it was funny. But when the same thing happened to Jennifer Lawrence? The response was much angrier, and slut-shaming was abound. The truth is that everyone’s body is their own to do with as they please. Want to share it freely? That’s awesome. Want to keep it more private? That’s also awesome. It’s a personal choice and no one should be judged or ridiculed for the choice they make.

Jauregui puts it perfectly when she says, “A woman embracing her sexuality isn’t wrong, it’s not being a slut.” No, because “slut” is just a made-up word used to make women feel bad for doing something men can do without protest. Thanks for shedding light on this important issue, girls! Now, when can we expect a new single?
