Fergie responded to the backlash over her recent national anthem performance
Less than 24 hours after causing an internet frenzy thanks to her jazz-inspired twist on the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game, Fergie has issued a statement about the debacle.
Fergie performed a sultry take on “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of the big basketball event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 18th, eliciting a wide range of reactions. But in a recent statement to TMZ, Fergie explained that she simply wanted to “try something special” for the star-studded NBA game.
She said: “I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
Even though her performance wasn’t well received, we applaud Fergie for addressing the situation directly and for not saying sorry. The performance was clearly a creative choice, and she’s sticking by it. We’re sure it wasn’t easy to read the flurry of criticism online post-performance, but she seems to have handled the situation like a total pro.

And while Fergie herself hasn’t taken to social media since the performance, her ex-husband Josh Duhamel shared the sweetest quote on Instagram from their son, Axl, which makes us wonder if it may be a secret message to Fergie.
Axl and Josh were also spotted bringing flowers to Fergie at her home, which is pretty freaking lovely.
