We’re getting pretty excited about this based-on-true-events feminist sports drama

We’ve all been pretty busy. You know, busy being BONKERS excited about the fall TV premiere dates. (Oh hey, did you know fall is in four days? Yep, we’re pumped too.) But now, we have a totally new thing to dance around about, thanks to Fox Searchlight Pictures.

It’s called Battle of the Sexes, and it’s about a tennis match. But before you start making comparisons to the mockumentary Seven Days in Hell, it’s actually based on the ultra-publicized 1973 tennis match between Bobby Riggs vs. Billie Jean King, and it’s bound to be super empowering.

In case you’re not up-to-date on tennis history, Riggs was a pro in the sport and was considerably older than then 29-year-old King, and the match became a televised sensation — but the real action was going on behind the scenes. King ended up defeating Riggs after he trash-talked her throughout the match, making King a tennis champ, a $100,000 winner, AND a feminist icon. YAAAS.

The project will be directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris — they directed Little Miss Sunshine, so they’re a pretty swell pair — and may be featuring Brie Larson (who you know from 21 Jump Street, Trainwreck, Room, and many more). The actress is currently in talks to play King. Previously, Emma Stone was attached the role, but had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts.

Larson would be performing alongside Steve Carell, who will be playing Riggs. So, naturally, this will not only be a drama, but have some comedy thrown in. Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) has been working on the script for years and has even consulted with King herself to make the project as true and hard-hitting as possible (Riggs passed away 10 years ago).

The project isn’t the only one surrounding the match. Two others are currently in the works — Proof, featuring Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti, and Match Maker, featuring Will Ferrell. TBH, we’ll probably be seeing every single one. A movie featuring a woman kicking total ass? Yes, yes, and yes.
