Ben & Jerry’s ice cream gets the lady-power makeover of our dreams

Ben & Jerry’s flavors named after celebrities are some of our favorites: AmeriCone Dream. Imagine Whirled Peace. Cherry Garcia. The list goes on. Except, wait a second. What do all of these have in common? Most of them are named after men.

Historically, there have only been TWO Ben & Jerry’s flavors that feature women: Liz Lemon’s Greek Frozen Yogurt in honor of Tina Fey, and Hannah Teter’s Maple Blondie in honor of the Olympic snowboarder. Those are pretty cool, but we need more, Ben (and Jerry)!

Luckily, a writer named Amanda McCall has a few ideas. She designed some ingenious new Ben & Jerry’s flavors, featuring some of the world’s most powerful women and posted her inventions to BuzzFeed.

“No, featuring women on pints of ice cream will not close the gender pay gap or elect more women into office,” she writes on BuzzFeed, “but since every famous white dude on the planet—from Elton John, Barenaked Ladies, and Queen, to Stephen Colbert, Will Ferrell and Monty Python—already has a Ben & Jerry’s tribute flavor, would it hurt to add a few more women to the list of honorees?”

NPR’s Tania Lombrozo quickly had McCall’s back and explained how it’s not just about underrepresentation in ice cream, it’s about gender inequality in things we don’t usually pay attention to.

“Most of us don’t walk out of Ben & Jerry’s disturbed by the disparity in flavor names, or leave mainstream movies wondering why so few women were capable of speech,” explains Lombrozo. “We need writers like McCall and organizations like the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film to run the numbers precisely because some forms of under- (and over-) representation stay under the radar — they strike is as ‘normal’ when they really should raise alarms.”

Consider our alarms sounding off, and our spoons out. Let’s make some S’moria Steinem—and a few of these other flavors, stat! Thanks Ben, Jerry.
