Someone reimagined U.S. history with all female presidents, and we’re tearing up

The latest face-morphing app to sweep the internet is FaceApp. The app went viral earlier in 2017 and bubbled in popularity again this month when people started using it to swap their gender. You’ve probably seen everyone you know on Facebook sharing photos of themselves with a caption like, “Whoa, I look hot as a dude.” This rudimentary app relies on the notion that gender is binary and that one can only look either male or female. Problematic as that may be, the app has made for at least one good thing.

Someone on Reddit edited all the U.S. presidents’ faces to make them look like women, and the result is a feminist reimagining of history. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t tearing up a bit. What if we had all female presidents?

Many of the comments on the photo are about how “hot” these fictional presidents look, and that’s not the point. The point is: What if America’s past presidents weren’t all male and mostly white? Why can’t we look at 45 smiling female faces and say, “Yeah, those are all our past presidents.” How different would today look if this were our past?

One comment on Facebook really drove the point home:

“These ladies look like every female boss or teacher or professor I ever had. It made me wonder what my life would have been like if I’d grown up knowing that I could be president someday,” a woman shared on Facebook.

We give you the Presidents of the United States, if they were women:

Here’s to more women, more people of color, and more LGBTQ+ individuals leading this country. Let’s aspire to a future in which the Hall of Presidents looks a lot more like the image above.
