Get ready for this female-powered Marvel movie to make history

Amazing news, guys! Marvel Studios is taking huge steps towards gender diversity in the superhero movie realm, and we are pumped. Marvel just hired two screenwriters for their 2018 film Captain Marvel, both of whom are women. Yes!

Nicole Perlman, co-writer of Guardians of the Galaxy, and Meg LeFauve, who worked on Pixar’s Inside Out, will join Marvel President Kevin Feige to bring Captain Marvel to the screen (FYI Captain Marvel is a lady). With this project Marvel is hoping to put female voices and perspectives front and center, and bringing on two amazing women to write the screenplay is a huge step in the right direction.

But that’s not the only remarkable thing about Captain Marvel. The film will focus on female superhero Captain Marvel, who originally made her comic book debut in 1977. Back then she was called Ms Marvel, the hero name of Carol Danvers. Danvers is an airforce pilot who discovers she has superpowers after an accident on a military base. She can fly and has super strength, which she uses to fight villains. But she also works for gender equality in her spare time, making her a serious feminist hero. As the tagline says, “This female fights back!” (That might need a little update, but we’re heading in the right direction!)

In recent years the “Ms” has thankfully been dropped, and replaced with the rank and title Captain Marvel deserves. Now she will be the first female superhero to headline her own movie. The flick is part of a group of nine box office busting films slated to be released by Marvel in the next few years, but Captain Marvel is already a standout.

Up until now, female heroes have been supporting characters, but Captain Marvel is going to change that and we are SO ready! The fact that the film is being helmed by two awesome women only makes it that much better.

Captain Marvel won’t hit theaters until 2018, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more!
