A female comedian just shut down a sexist joke on BBC’s “Have I Got News For You,” and now she’s our hero

The topic of sexual harassment and assault is not funny to us at all. So when we found out that a female comedian shut down a sexist joke on BBC’s Have I Got News For You, she immediately became our hero.

Sexual harassment has always been a serious issue, but recent high-profile allegations against powerful entertainment industry figures like Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner, and Kevin Spacey mean it’s now all over our social media feeds. And if you need to be convinced that it happens widely, to people across all industries, you can read one of the millions of #metoo real-life sexual harassment stories.

So what happened on the satirical show Have I Got News For You? Guest host and comedian Jo Brand was applauded by the audience when she called out and shut down the all-male panel when they didn’t seem to take the topic of sexual harassment seriously. In the segment, Ian Hislop, a team captain on the show, suggested that some of the Westminster-related allegations were not “high-level crime.” Brand’s response is so on point, we pretty much started applauded, too, even from behind our computer screens.

Here’s what she had to say when she heard the sexist joke.

Yep, Jo Brand is officially one of our new heroes.

“As the only representative of the female gender here today, I know it’s not high-level, but it doesn’t have to be high-level for women to feel under siege in somewhere like the House of Commons," she said. "Actually, for women, if you’re constantly being harassed, even in a small way, that builds up and that wears you down.

This is how we feel about Brand standing up for women everywhere (no pun intended).

Of course, the Twitter-verse had a lot to say on the matter, too.

Suffice it to say, we cannot be more proud of Brand for speaking up and speaking out for women everywhere. Hopefully one day, sexist comments and sexual harassment will occur less often, so fewer people like Brand will have to defend against them. But until then, we applaud all the Brands out there for being voices for us all.
