Feast your eyes on the truly incredible Rube Goldberg machine one dad built for his baby’s gender reveal
Dad Taylor Calmus has probably come up with one of the most creative gender reveal ideas yet — a Rube Goldberg machine! Since gender reveal “events” have become more popular over the last few years, people have come up with increasingly creative ways to have them. But Calmus, who is a dad vlogger and DIY craftsman, took things for the next level for his second child.
While his wife was out of town, Calmus and a friend created an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine around the couple’s house that ended with the reveal of their new baby’s sex. The Rube Goldberg machine, which takes a simple task and makes it far more elaborate than necessary — but in the most dazzling of ways — goes through the entire Calmus house.

The machine, which took three days for Calmus and his friends to create, was triggered by Calmus’ 18-month-old son, Theo, knocking a bottle out of his crib. It then followed a labyrinth of obstacles, going through the shower, the kitchen, and each level of the family’s home.
“We had just gotten the envelope from the doctor with the gender in it and we we’re dying to find out,” Calmus said in an interview with BuzzFeed. “I thought it would be the perfect time to do it because I knew it would take over the whole house and I didn’t want to inconvenience her with that any more than I had to.”
At least he was nice enough to wait until his wife was out of the house!
Despite the obviously elaborate set-up, Calmus told BuzzFeed that he didn’t have any plans for how he wanted the contraption to go. “[My friend] Aaron and I knew we wanted the machine to be started by Theo upstairs in the nursery and end down in the garage with an explosion of confetti,” he said. After that, it was all a matter of trial and error to get it just right.
We couldn’t think of a better way to find out that their new baby is a girl, even though her big brother Theo cried at the end (probably more from the surprise of the confetti than the fact that he is getting a sister). Here’s to more creative endeavors from the Calmus family!
