Your favorite Sesame Street songs are up for auction, but you need big bucks to grab them
Where are a pair of deep pockets when you need ’em? This yearning for sudden financial abundance is directly tied to the fact that some of our most beloved Sesame Street songs are being auctioned off, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. Needless to say, we really wish we could buy them all.
In addition to a few blockbuster films, several of Sesame Street‘s hit theme songs are up for sale, thanks to Royalty Exchange, an online marketplace that offers buyers the chance to own music and screenwriter royalties.
Included in the lineup of the Sesame Street songs auction are “Abby’s Flying Fairy School” and — one of our peppy faves — the “Elmo’s World” theme song:

Last year, “Elmo’s World” made more than $25,000 of residuals. Meanwhile, “Abby’s Flying Fairy School” brought in $10,000. Those combined earnings went to the estate of famed Sesame Street writer Tony Geiss.
Additionally, bidders will have the chance to nab screenwriting residuals from films An American Tail (We’ll always and forever heart Fievel!) and The Land Before Time.
Obviously, with such high-stakes offerings on the line, you have to pay the cost to be the songwriting and publishing and royalty boss. First of all, you need a ton of moolah to get in on the action: Bidding starts at $430,000 with a $10,000 increase per bid. The auction closes June 9 1 p.m. MT.
If you’re lucky (and loaded) enough to participate, owning songs from this catalog could pay off handsomely. Radio play, live performances streaming, and YouTube views of the aforementioned songs all earn residuals, making for a pretty hefty passive income.
