What this woman said to her boyfriend’s fat-shamers is filling our hearts with love
After Ashley Stevens caught the bouquet at her friend’s wedding, she took a hilarious and adorable photograph with her boyfriend, Christopher Reed — who (jokingly) looked like he was sweating bullets while sitting next to Stevens’ father. (For those unfamiliar, the superstition goes that whoever catches the bouquet is the next to get married.)
Another friend posted the photo to Reddit, and it quickly went viral; but things then took a terrible turn. People began attacking Reed, making derogatory comments, and, in particular, shaming him for his weight. Disgusted by what she saw, Stevens took to Facebook to respond to her boyfriend’s fat-shamers — and what she had to say was all kinds of amazing.
“If you have seen the comments on our photo that went viral, they are pretty shallow and rude,” she writes. “I would advise you not to look at them. It surprises me how many people are so quick to judge when they don’t even know you.”
“Well let me just tell you, I won the jackpot with Christopher,” she continues. “He may not have rock hard abs like the world tells girls to want in a guy, but really, why does that even matter when you are trying to really find someone to spend the rest of your life with? He is so thoughtful and patient, he always shows me how he loves me in little ways, he is my best friend. I love him for who he is and he loves me for who I am.”
The couple has been together for 2.5 years, and (obviously) make for a super amazing pair. (Seriously, who’s cutting onions in here?!) Stevens completely nails everything that’s wrong with the fat-shaming calmly addresses the comments her boyfriend received, and gives us the perfect reminder of what really matters in a healthy, happy relationship: How you feel about and treat one another.
Reed also took to Facebook to voice just how grateful he’s been for the support the couple has received since Stevens’ post, writing, “I couldn’t be more thankful for the support and love from our family and friends. We’re here because of you and we wouldn’t trade you for the world. We love y’all.”
“So as of us and those rude comments, we know the truth and we will block out the haters,” Stevens writes.
