A man fat-shamed a fitness blogger at the gym, but she’s not about to let it get her down
You know what you shouldn’t do? Comment on strangers’ bodies — at the gym or anywhere else. After being fat-shamed while working out, one fitness blogger took to Instagram to call out the haters.
In her Instagram post, Julie Ana Kim says a man came up to her at the gym to tell her how brave she was for working out “at her size.”
He proceeded to offer up a wealth of backhanded compliments, including motioning with his hands “how big I was while saying he himself couldn’t imagine coming to the gym while being that big.”
Kim says she’d already had a trying week where she felt down on herself, and the stranger’s comments did nothing to improve her self-esteem.
"I wish I could say I was like fuck you and kept on with my workout," she wrote. "Instead, I just smiled in shock until he left and cried in the bathroom."
Kim, who has lost more than 75 pounds through a series of healthy lifestyle changes, says this kind of judgment is what prevents people from starting healthy fitness journeys in the first place.
"I was hurt, embarrassed, and mortified. If he said this to me at the beginning of my journey, I would never come back to the gym. I was always scared to workout at the gym for this reason. That people would judge me."
Kim ended her post with a message of positivity and determination.
"I refuse to let this deter me from going to the gym. I've learned to love going to the gym and it's my happy place and it will continue to be."
Get it, girl!
