In a recent interview with Allure magazine, the actress, singer, and dancer Zendaya shared her rules for life, and more specifically, the mantra she keeps when picking her red carpet looks — and one of them blatantly goes against the fashion culture of the red carpet.
Zendaya opened up about the pressures of the spotlight and how she and her stylist, Law Roach, collaborate:”We don’t do pretty. Pretty is boring. When young women see me go out, with an entire world to criticize what I put on, and do whatever the hell I want? It’s empowering [for them]. It’s not just about clothes. It’s never been just about clothes. We do what we want.”
In a video accompanying her Allure feature, Zendaya further explained how she DGAF about what other people think when it comes to her red carpet looks:
She called it “liberating” and added: “Of course people aren’t going to like it, but thats the whole point, for there to be conversation and talk.
“I would never experiment and I’d never find my confidence, so I have this rule: You have to live for yourself and what makes you happy,” said Zendaya.
Regardless of our personal style leanings, doing whatever we want is a style mantra most of us can get on board with.
Of course, it would help if we also had professional stylists and access to the same outfits as her.
