How much Carrie Bradshaw's "really big closet" would actually cost in Manhattan
When we think of the most romantic gestures we’ve ever seen on the big screen, we can’t help but think of Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City: The Movie, when she asked Big to build her a “really big closet.” And that’s precisely what he did. It’s such a dreamy thing to think about because when you consider what it’s really like to live in Manhattan, a large walk-in closet simply isn’t part of the reality. You’re probably just feeling lucky to have a place to hang up your clothes at all.
Even though the movie came out in 2008, we still can’t stop thinking about that gigantic closet. In case you’ve ever wondered how much it would cost to score yourself a Carrie-esque “really big closet,” wonder no more. According to improvenet.com, getting a customized closet built in your Manhattan home can cost upwards of $6,000. And that might even be a lowball figure.
Having a large closet is a coveted thing to possess in New York City these days, and in many ways it displays a certain kind of status. In 2013 Elissa Gootman reported for the New York Times on what it takes to get a walk-in closet built into your apartment, and how much New Yorkers are willing to pay for it. A company called Clos-ette signs up for this kind of job all the time. A sales director from Clos-ette tells the NYT they’re giving their customers a “superluxury product.”
One couple in particular hired Clos-ette to build them customized closets in their new apartment overlooking Madison Square Garden, and it was reported that they paid “in the high five figures” for the renovations. High five figures. Phew, that’s a lot of green to dish out for some closets.
Well, at least now you know what it would take to build a Carrie-inspired closet. It might be time to start saving up, because something tells us that piggy bank you had as a kid won’t cover it.
