Salty Tamarind Lime Fizz
I am one of those people who would love to be minimalist. I flip through the pages of magazines ogling those white rooms. I scour design blogs eyeing up those rooms with two things in them. I am obsessed with those gorgeous Nordic homes that have just about nothing in them.
But, alas, I love my stuff more. I love my collection of cake plates, my dozens of milkglass vases, my stacks of pretty cards that I occasionally use to handwrite letters. I love the bits of clutter, I feel like without them I might just walk to the airport and fly away somewhere on a whim. You can’t do that with 10 bags. My clutter roots me.
But none the less, every few months I see one Swedish house too many and I start routing though my cupboards, cleaning everything out, downsizing it to what my mind wishes it was. This is always a short lived phase, but kind of a fun one anyways.
So this time I attacked my kitchen. I was ruthless with the cookie cutters, unflinching with my small bags of unidentified flours, determined to get rid of anything and everything unnescessary. Things that hadn’t been used in a few months were gone. Just like that.
Except of course, the reason I’m not minimalist is because I am terrible at this. Truly. And I remembered this small fact half way through my mission toward a simplified life when I found the package of tamarind in the back of my cupboard.
Never used, still it’s in it’s sealed package, there it was. I had bought it months ago thinking I would do something with it. Make a curry maybe? Anyways, it was there, and I was unable to throw out this unopened totally still good piece of food and so I kept it, swearing I would make something with it immediately.
So, in the interest of using it up, and also making something delicious here is a tamarind cocktail. It’s simple really, just plunk a piece of tamarind into some vodka, wait a week or so and then mix it up with some simple syrup and lime and top it with some bubbly water.
The result is super light and refreshing with this complex sour flavour from both the lime and the tamarind.
And now I must go and drink mine, whilst finishing this damned task of cleaning my desk. There is too much clutter!
Salty Tamarind Lime Fizz
- 2 inch piece of Tamarind
- 3 Limes
- 2 cups Vodka
- ½ cup Sugar
- Soda Water
- 1 tbsp Salt
Make Tamarind Vodka:
Pour the vodka into a jar. Add in the tamarind and let it sit for 7-14 days. If you have extra you can just take the tamarind out and it will last a few months like that.
Make Simple Syrup:
Mix the sugar with ½ cup water in a small pot. Bring to a boil and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Cool.
- 1 ½ oz Tamarind Vodka
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- ½ oz Simple Syrup
- 1 oz Lime Juice
- Soda Water to top
In a large glass, stir together the vodka, simple syrup, salt and lime juice with a couple big ice cubs.
Top with soda and serve with a slice of lime.
