Whoa: This is the most expensive handbag EVER sold
Go ahead — splurge on that purse you’ve had your eye on for a while, because the world’s most expensive handbag was just sold, and its price tag will make any other bag seem 100% affordable.
During its 30th anniversary sale, auction house Christie’s in Hong Kong sold the most expensive handbag ever for $300,168. The purse, sold by a private Asian collector, is a matte white Diamond Himalaya Niloticus crocodile diamond Birkin 30 (say all that five times fast) — naturally, with 18k white gold and diamonds in there.
“The diamond pieces created by Hermes are exceptional, but none are nearly as iconic as the Himalaya,” Christie’s said in a press release prior to the sale, according to CNN. “It is believed that only one or two of the Diamond Himalayas are produced each year, globally, making it one of the lowest production runs for handbags.”
This bag breaks a previous record for world’s most expensive handbag ever sold — and that record was previously held by Christie’s, as well.
“We broke the world record last year, so it’s the second time in this room we’ve broken the record, which is really exciting,” Christie’s senior Asia vice-president of handbags and accessories, Matthew Rubinger, told ABC.net. “It’s one of those moments that come together when the seller is thrilled, the buyer is thrilled, Christie’s is happy. It was a really good moment for the anniversary sale.”
The previous record-holding bag was a $222,000 fuchsia diamond-studded Hermes Birkin. But what makes these bags so expensive — and covetable?
“It’s a complicated question because it’s a handful of factors. It is about rarity,” Rubinger told ABC.net. “So how many exist? How many are being produced? Whether it’s discontinued. . . There are some that could have been produced in the last two or three years. But just because of their rarity, their iconic status, their handful of other factors. They can be extremely collectable.”
That Madewell bag isn’t looking so expensive now, is it?
