The late ’90s and early 2000s was a time when less was more when it came to fashion. One of the whackiest and most memorable trends was the “bandana shirt,” which was literally just a bandana tied around your chest. And yes, the ’90s are back, so we shouldn’t be surprised to see the bandana shirt back in action. However, Emma Stone’s take on the bandana shirt is a high-fashion masterpiece and we have fallen back in bandana love.

Stone arrived to The 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards in a two-piece ensemble comprised of a floor-length black skirt and a modernized bandana-styled crop top.

It’s a crazy 2000s trend in disguise and although we’ve been bamboozled, we’re on board.

The top is expertly folded and pleated to look like something out of a modern art museum. We also love the subtle shine of the sequins and the way they are sewn into a geometric pattern.

And if you’re wondering what the back looks like, it’s very similar to the bandana shirts of yore. The straps connect to the corners of the shirt and everything is somehow secured to the waistline of the skirt. Does this make it a dress? Can we even call this bandana-esque shirt a crop top?

We’re just delightfully confused and in awe of everything that is happening with this outfit.

Even though this whole modernized bandana top looks like an architect put it together, any DIY-er could throw together their own bandana shirt with just a few supplies. Also note that you don’t actually have to use a bandana — any square piece of fabric will work.

Check out this video on how to recreate your own bandana halter top. Then start using your designer brain to think of unique ways to make this piece the chicest thing this side of the Mississippi.

We see you bandana top. Don’t think we’ve forgotten about you! We like your new look and we’re 100% willing to sport you in the New Year.
