Around 200 Gap and Banana Republic stores are closing, but something else we love will be taking their place
If you grew up in the ’90s and early 2000s, you probably have a soft spot in your heart for Gap. In fact, they might have even manufactured your very first perfume — remember Dream and Heaven? That’s why it’s a bummer that Gap and Banana Republic are closing stores. Because, well, it means that something about their formula just isn’t working today. In total, about 200 locations are set to shut down in the next three years.
While this is a bummer, the company — called Gap Inc. — is planning on growing two of their other brands instead. And, chances are, you’ve heard of them before. Old Navy and Athleta, also owned by the company, are set to grow by 270 stores.
According to Gap Inc., Old Navy makes up about 50% of the company’s sales. We knew the store was popular (we mean, their flip flops are a solid part of the summer), but didn’t realize they were that big of a hit.
If you’re losing your local Gap, you might want to focus on some of the good memories before having to say goodbye.
For example, the moment you fled there for a vest back in 1999, after seeing this commercial featuring a popular Madonna cover.
Or perhaps when you just couldn’t get enough leather for some reason.
Or that time you just felt the need to buy a striped scarf and hang out with Rashida Jones.
Even though the store isn’t doing so well, we’re glad the company is thinking ahead — and hey, no matter what, we’ll always have the memories.
