Chloë Sevigny is, without a doubt, the epitome of great style — it’s just hard, sometimes, to figure out exactly how to describe her look. Luckily, she’s trying for us. At a recent New York Fashion Week event, Chloë Sevigny described her style as a”weird, sexy baby” look, according to New York’s The Cut. And, uh, we’ll take it!

The actress explained, “Transitioning into my forties, I’m trying to embrace maybe a little bit more ladylike silhouette, kind of.” Then again, she was hanging out at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month in a Miu Miu romper, so who knows what “ladylike” even means.  She had trouble defining her look, too. “I don’t know. I’m trying. It’s a struggle,” she said.

Going for a “ladylike” look is a big change for Sevigny. If you remember back in the mid ’90s, The New Yorker profiled Sevigny chilling in the East Village, thumbing through a fashion magazine, tsk-tsk-ing most mainstream style. The magazine quoted her as saying, while wearing clear jelly sandals at a time when everyone was rocking heavy combat boots and puffing on a cigarette:

Hey, if you were Chloë Sevigny in 1994, you would’ve said the same, most likely. She was the height of cool.

Here’s that weird, sexy baby romper, in case you were wondering.

Back in the ’90s, whatever Chloe wore immediately became cool. Daisy von Furth, then 25 years old, said of her friend at the time:

Check out these tights she wore back in 1996.

Which is precisely why it might be hard for her to try to “settle” now into more “old ladyish” outfits. Then again, nothing looks old on Sevigny. But if she’s going through a new phase, we’d be happy to volunteer as tribute and come rifle through her closet.
