“Fashion Police” is coming to an end, and with a tribute to Joan Rivers

Celebrities, you may now breathe a littler easier on the red carpet. Because Fashion Police will end its years-long run next month, according to Variety. But first, Fashion Police will say goodbye with a farewell special that will pay tribute to late host Joan Rivers.

Rivers’ red carpet coverage kicked off in 1995 and quickly injected new life into the longtime comedian’s career, eventually leading to the debut of E!’s Fashion Police in 2002. The concept was pretty straight-forward and more-or-less stuck to the same structure throughout its years: Rivers and a rotating roster of celebrity panelists (including daughter Melissa) raved about and ripped apart celebrity fashion choices.

The show had its ups and downs during that time.

There was Rivers’ unexpected death in 2014, a controversy about host Giuliana Rancic making racially-charged comments that prompted both Kelly Osbourne and Kathy Griffin’s departures in 2015, and the repeat criticism that attacking celebrities (female celebrities in particular) for their fashion choices was problematic on several levels.

But the show clearly had staying power and got people talking.

A lot of that success was because of Rivers. As Wilshire Studios senior VP of original production Gary Snegaroff told Variety:

"What’s been consistent through all the years has been a love of fashion, and that started with Joan. The only thing she loved more than fashion was getting a laugh, so this combined her two loves. She always felt that fashion was something to be discussed, not to be taken too seriously, and that’s the show we put together.

To honor Rivers’ legacy, the special will feature highlights from the comedian’s years hosting Fashion Police.

And also clips from a previously unaired episode dedicated to ’80s fashion. Along with Melissa Rivers (who took over FP following her mother’s death), current panelists Rancic, Margaret Cho, Brad Goreski, and NeNe Leakes will participate in the series finale. We’ll also see the hosts look back at favorite segments and memorable moments, and welcome special celebrity guests.

The program is set to air on November 27th.
