The “Fantastic Beasts 2” teaser trailer might have revealed a *major* spoiler — and it involves the Lestrange family

The teaser trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald finally arrived last week, and it may have brought some spoilers with it. If you don’t want even a *hint* of Fantastic Beasts 2 spoilers, turn back now! OK, is everyone else ready? Great. A major Fantastic Beasts 2 spoiler is maybe hiding in plain sight in the film’s teaser, and no joke, it’s juicy AF.

Eagle-eyed fans who paused the Fantastic Beasts 2 teaser at the exact right moment would notice a *possible* key to unlocking the sequel.

In one brief moment, it appears that Young, Hot Dumbledore is studying the Lestrange family tree. Yes, those Lestranges. As in, Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius Black, possible Newt Scamander love interest Leta Lestrange and — gasp — Credence Barebone?!

Yes! It appears that Credence is a member of the extended Lestrange family — but what does this mean?

In Harry Potter lore, the Lestranges are one of the oldest, darkest, and most powerful pureblood wizarding families. They weren’t all like that, though: Sirius Black had a heart of gold, and our sweet boy Newt longs for the time before Leta “changed.” If Credence is technically a Lestrange, then he’s just another in the long, long line of darkly powerful wizards ahead of him.

So wait, is Fantastic Beasts 2 teeing up an inverse Harry Potter situation?

As Entertainment Weekly points out, there’s a lot of overlap between our boy Potter and the tortured Barebone.

Both are dark-haired orphans, raised in abusive homes and determined to quash any supernatural ability within them. Harry, at least, had a guiding light in Dumbledore in his early years. Is that because, decades before, Dumbledore watched Grindelwald groom a young adult with a similar backstory…for evil?

It’s definitely starting to look that way.

As with all major spoilers, one should take the Fantastic Beasts 2 rumors with the proverbial grain of salt. We have literally no way of knowing if this is real until the movie actually comes out. But, in the meantime, it’s a super-fun idea. Harry Potter: The Prequel, but darker? We’re already dressed up and waiting in line for tickets. Send pumpkin pasties ASAP, please. After all, the movie doesn’t come out until November 16th, 2018.
