Twitter found a major “Fantastic Beasts 2” plot hole, but there are some explanations behind it
We finally have a teaser for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and oh no! There’s a problem with it — and not just Johnny Depp, either. There’s potentially a major Fantastic Beasts 2 plot hole, and Twitter is ready for answers.
In the first scene of the Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald teaser, we see a bunch of adult wizards Apparating into Hogwarts. *Record scratch* Wait, what? Because, as we all know, YOU CAN’T APPARATE INTO HOGWARTS.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry is famously protected by dozens of spells, which have the purpose of keeping unwanted visitors out. This is less evident in the film adaptations, but anyone who’s read a Harry Potter book knows how much work goes into protecting the school. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, for instance, an ailing Dumbledore uses what remains of his energy to undo the spells, or put a counter-spell on himself and Harry, so they are able to safely get back into the school.
So what’s up with these grown wizards just showing up?
Twitter had questions about how exactly these wizards Apparated into Hogwarts.
"You can't Apparate inside the Hogwarts grounds, how often do I have to tell you?" – Hermione Granger #CrimesOfGrindelwald #FantasticBeasts pic.twitter.com/p14YeOjfsI

false
Just watched the Fantastic Beasts trailer and people apparate right in front of Hogwarts?? Did I misread Hogwarts: A Story? Unless this was made afterwards? @jk_rowling

And they make valid points, but there are actually a few explanations.
On one hand, it’s possible that Hogwarts’ restrictions were less severe during the events of Fantastic Beasts 2. Without the immediate threat of Grindelwald, Voldemort, or similar dangers, how much *needed* to go into keeping wizards out? And it’s not like the modern-day protections were that intense, either: Draco Malfoy was able to sneak in Death Eaters through the Vanishing Cabinet, Charlie Weasley and his coworkers swooped in to rescue Hagrid’s dragon, and it’s evident that Animagi pretty much have no rules.

Perhaps the spells can be lifted, depending on the circumstance. But that opens up another world of questions: What are the logistics of a drop-in at Hogwarts? Would someone (for instance, Dumbledore) have to be notified of the visit in advance? Is there a process for that? Fantastic Beasts 2, please clarify.
Fans of the Harry Potter franchise are famously tough to please, but we would love a little more intel on this one. If it’s *that* easy, we definitely would have Apparated over to Hogwarts a long, long time ago.
