Fans are honoring Carrie Fisher by opening up about their mental health issues on Twitter, and we think she would have been so proud

It’s hard to know just how to celebrate the lives of the celebrities we held so dear. As we continue mourning Carrie Fisher, some fans are sharing their mental health struggles with the world to honor her legacy of mental health destigmatization. It’s exactly as incredible and important as it sounds.

At the end of the day, Carrie Fisher was a HUGE feminist icon, and a big part of that was talking about mental health openly and challenging the stigma surrounding mental illness. While there are many reasons to love her, her incredible mental health advocacy is arguably the highest on the list.

As the New York Times reports, the hashtag #InHonorOfCarrie was created by MTV senior political correspondent Ana Marie Cox, who decided to honor Carrie by being honest about her own struggles with mental health.

From there, the hashtag was born.

It’s seriously *so* incredible, and we think Ms. Fisher would have been so proud. May Carrie Fisher’s memory continue to inspire others struggling with mental illness to be proud of who they are and to never, ever think they are any less because of it.
