This family’s corrected birth notice is filled with so many beautiful feelings
Sometimes the day’s news gives you the genuine feels. In a “retraction” to a birth announcement from 1995, the family of Australian transgender man Kai Bogert displayed their love and acceptance for their newly out son by taking out a classified ad “retracting” his 1995 birth announcement.
“In 1995 we announced the arrival of our sprogget Elizabeth Anne as a daughter,” the ad reads. “He informs us that we were mistaken. Oops! Our bad. We would like to present our wonderful son — Kai Bogert. Loving you is the easiest thing in the world. Tidy your room.” See? The feels.
In an interview with the Courier-Mail, Kai’s mother Yolanda expressed her support for her son.
“I needed to show my son I support him 100 percent and wanted to let the world know that,” she told the paper. “It is all very new to us. Kai just told me a few days ago that he no longer wanted to live as a girl.” She later notes that she’s “always known there was something different about Kai,” and that while there were “little signs along the way,” it wasn’t something the family had ever discussed.
For his part, Kai was astounded both by his mother’s unwavering acceptance and for the ad.
“I am so happy with what she has done. This last week has changed everything for me,” he tells the Courier-Mail. “I am still me but I am more me than I was a few days ago and feel free.”
Far too often, families reject their trans children, either by outright disowning them or simply refusing to acknowledge their identities. Statistics about homeless trans youth are both shocking and absolutely heartbreaking.
Stories of families accepting their trans children are always wonderful, but this one might just take the cake in terms of overall “d’awww” factor. Congrats, Kai!
