Fall-inspired make-up and nail art tutorial
At this time of year, nature provides us with some stunningly vivid colour combinations. The warm hues of bronze, copper, scarlets, browns and golden tones make for universally flattering colour combinations when it comes to beauty trends and techniques. Here’s my guide on how to wear autumnal shades this fall!
The Autumnal Eye
1. In order to ensure the best colour payoff from your eyeshadow, prep your eyelids with an eyeshadow primer. I use MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Soft Ochre.
2. Using a fluffy angled eyeshadow brush, sweep a copper coloured eyeshadow into the crease of your eyelid and up onto your brow bone. I used the copper shade from Victoria Jackson‘s Eyes Have It eyeshadow palette. This shade, the colour in the crease and on the brow bone, will act as your transition colour.
3. Use a blending brush to add a golden shade underneath your eyebrows, blending it with the copper tone. I used Kitten by Stila.
4. With a smaller, flatter eyeshadow brush, pat a dark brown shade onto your lid. Smaller eyeshadow brushes give a more concentrated result! Blend this darker shade into the copper tone that you previously applied. I used the matte brown shade Truffle from Makeup Academy’s Ever After matte palette. To soften the look, just keep blending the colours with a fluffy, large blending brush.
5. To keep the look bright, add a light rose-gold shade to the inner corners of your eyelids. I used Dynamic by Lush Cosmetics and lightly dabbed the colour on using my ring finger.
6. Add mascara to your lashes and eyeliner to your waterline. Using a very small smudging brush, blend the copper shade underneath your lower lashline.
Contour and Highlight
1. Add a golden illuminating highlighter to your cheekbones to keep your complexion radiant and sunny, even in the fall! I used Icing’s Baked Highlighter compact.
2. Using a smaller, angled face powder brush, add a bronzer underneath your cheekbones. I used Hoola by Benefit Cosmetics, as it is a matte bronzer without any shimmer. This texture compliments the illuminating highlighter and keeps your face from looking like a disco ball.
The ’90s Lip
Thanks to the likes of Kylie Jenner, the nude-brown 90s lip is extremely on trend. The understated colour works well with a dramatic smokey eye and perfectly compliments this autumnal look.
1. Prep your lips! Exfoliate and then moisturise with a light balm or lip primer. You may wish to add concealer to your lip area in order to create a blank canvas for the lip colour.
2. Line your lips with a brown-nude lip pencil. Use the X method in order to achieve a perfect cupids bow shape! You may wish to fill in your lips entirely with a lip pencil as this ensures the durability of your lip colour.
3. Add your desired lip gloss or lipstick. I think this autumnal look works great with a matte light brown shade, so I used Makeup Academy’s Fawn Fancy.
Get the midas touch with this update on the french manicure! I combined a golden glitter-gradient accent nail with golden tips on the rest of the nails.
1. Add an autumnal shade to your nails. Browns, plums and dark reds would work well for this look.
2. Add a golden nail polish to the end of your accent nail. Then, without using anymore of the nail colour from the bottle, use the excess on the brush to swipe the colour subtly down the rest of the nail.
3. Using either tape or french manicure tip-guides, add thin and solid line of gold to the ends of your nails. I used Ciate paint pots in Sand Dune.
4. Add a topcoat to your nails for a glossy finish and to protect from chips.
