How To Fall In Love (With Yourself)

When we are in a romantic relationship, we love to the fullest. We show our partners how much we care through our words and our actions. Sadly, those words and actions take a back seat when it comes to the most important relationship in our lives—the one we have with ourselves. We spend so much time loving our mates, and at the end of the day there is only a little love left over for us.

Now, I’m not saying we shouldn’t love our partners to the moon and back. But, let’s not forget to pick out those shining stars for ourselves along the way. Here are six ways to love yourself just a little bit more.

1. Shower yourself with words of affection

We often tell our partners how much we love them through our kind words. We might tell them how cute they look or how smart we think they are. But why aren’t we telling ourselves the same? Start writing down love notes for yourself. Write inspirational quotes on your mirror. Tell yourself three things you love about yourself every morning. Treat yo’ self to some compliments, girl!

2. Buy yourself some flowers

A flower a day keeps the bad vibes away. Flowers aren’t just meant for Valentine’s Day or when your partner is trying to say “I’m sorry.” Buy yourself some flowers that make you happy. When you wake up next to those roses, it will start your day off right. Falling in love with yourself never smelled so wonderful.

3. Cut yourself some slack

Usually we are the hardest on ourselves. We make excuses for others, while being our own worst critic. How about we let the reins loose a bit and cut ourselves some slack. So, you didn’t exercise this week, or maybe you didn’t get an A+ on that paper—it’s okay. Nobody is perfect. And being “perfect” is actually quite boring.

4. Make a list of the things—both big and small—that bring you joy

We’re always thinking about how to make others happy. But how can we make ourselves happy too? Think about what puts a smile on your face and do THAT. Write down a list of these things and do a couple of them a week. Do you, girl, do you.

5. Get decked out for no particular occasion

You don’t have to be going out on a date to get all dolled up. What about getting your cute on for yourself? Try out a new hairstyle for a change and put on that red lipstick that you’re too scared to wear out. When you look in the mirror, you’re gonna love what you see.

6. Make a “Just for Me” Mix

Remember making those playlists or CDs for your boyfriend/girlfriend? Take this idea and turn it around. Make a playlist for yourself. Listen to the songs that make you feel empowered. Create a playlist with all the songs you love and that make you feel happy. There’s nothing like a good Beyoncé ditty to make you fall in love with yourself all over again.
