Facebook’s new “Photo Magic” feature wants to scan your camera roll for pics of your friends

If you thought it was crazy that Facebook could detect faces in the photos you uploaded, then just imagine if it could do it in your camera roll. Turns out, soon that will be a reality, and it’s all thanks to the new “Photo Magic” feature currently being tested in Australia. Not only does this new feature recognize your friend in a photo, it also wants you to send it to them via Messenger. Essentially, you take the photos, and Photo Magic will do the rest.

Head of Messenger, David Marcus confirmed the development of this new feature last night, saying, “This is one of our upcoming features I’m really excited about as it’s still way too difficult to share photos with friends, and receive all the ones you’re in.”

The feature will use the same technology that recognizes users on Facebook and apply that to your camera roll, popping up with a tag suggestion and asking if you want to send the photo. It’s great for when you take that insta-worthy group photo, and everyone in it wants a chance to post it.

However, if this whole thing makes you nervous, you don’t have to worry about being unknowingly identified. Users who don’t want their names showing up in camera rolls can opt-out in the settings on their timelines, and can instead go about sending and receiving photos the old fashioned way.

If the Australian testing goes well, the feature should be making its way over to the U.S. soon. We can’t wait.
