Explaining James Franco’s latest project. It’s complicated.

James Franco is a champion multi-tasker, what with juggling simultaneous projects in almost any field of culture you can name. And his next project is the result of all those interlapping interests, a hybrid of Franco’s many cultural obsessions. Here’s the deal: Franco has a band called Daddy that he formed in 2012 with his friend Tim O’Keefe.

Their first record, Let Me Get What I Want is a tribute to The Smiths, but it’s also drawn from Franco’s book of poetry, Directing Herbert White. In the collection, Franco has a ten-poem sequence called “The Best of the Smiths: Side A to Side B.”

The Daddy record is inspired by those poems. And all ten recordings will have their own music video. At the end, Franco explained to Vice, those videos will all fit together into a full-length movie. And if that wasn’t confusing enough, Franco also convinced original Smiths bassist Andy Rourke to play on all those recordings. Got it? No? That’s OK. The video for Daddy’s first single, “Charming Man,” is out, and that’s really all you need to know.
