Experts say you’ll outgrow Ikea at this age and we respectfully disagree

Say it isn’t so! Experts say that you’ll outgrow Ikea at a specific age, and we have to respectfully disagree! Yes, there is an actual study that shows the age that people no longer want, or need, slash should, be shopping at Ikea and we’re sort of panicking.

Everyone knows that Ikea has affordable, stylish items that fill pretty much any 20-something to 30-somethings’ apartment. The Swedish retailer is also known for the hilarious stories of people trying to build their seemingly easy bookshelves and desks.

Now however, we’ve learned that there is one age — age 34 to be exact — that it’s no longer necessary to shop at this fine establishment. In fact, according to lending site Earnest as reported by Real Simple, people begin to so-called “break up” with their Ikea furniture at age 34.

The experts at Earnest have analyzed responses (anonymous responses) from over tens of thousands of its users, in order to get to this number. According to their study, they discovered that most people shop at Ikea from their mid-’20s to their mid-’30s, which makes sense based on the stores great deals.

After their mid-’30s, aka after they hit that 34-year-old mark and bail on Ikea they tend to move to stores like Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Williams-Sonoma and Bed Bath & Beyond.

While we don’t love the idea of saying goodbye to Ikea based on age, we do get that by most people’s mid-’30s they are making more money, and therefore would upgrade their furniture and shopping habits. But what if you’re not making more money? I mean, we’ll keep shopping at Ikea as long as we want, NO SHAME!

The Earnest charts also reveal that home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot are more on people’s radar once they become home owners and enter their ’40s.

Even though the statistics and study does make sense, you don’t have to stop shopping at the Swedish retailer if you don’t want to. Plus, the store has been stepping up its game with higher-end additions and artist-designed pieces, so maybe the 34 number will change in the future.
