Just a few reasons why we’re so excited for “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
While I tend to follow the philosophy of “Live each day to the fullest,” I’ve honestly been counting the minutes until today. Not just because I’m over here on the snow-battered East Coast, hoping that March brings some slightly higher temperatures-but because it’s finally time for Netflix to unveil the new Tina Fey-Robert Carlock-helmed series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, streaming on Netflix at this very moment! As a pretty die-hard Liz Lemonite, I’d watch anything that was dreamed up by the minds behind 30 Rock. So here are some of the reasons I think you all should be just as excited as I am about this new show.
Jack Burditt
If you don’t know Jack, he currently writes for The Mindy Project, but previously wrote for 30 Rock and of course UKS. I follow Jack on Twitter along with the rest of the The Mindy Project scribes and he consistently makes me laugh with his daily witty commentary. His track record for writing for hilarious shows is solid, so anytime I see his name attached to something, I know it’s going to be great. He’s also a big football fan, and now that the season is over, he seems a little sad, so you can send him a nice tweet @jackburditt about how much you’re looking forward to watching UKS.
Quotable Quotes
It’s possible that I will quote “30 Rock” for the rest of my life. With many of the same brilliant people running things for UKS, I am eagerly anticipating new catch phrases like “Blergh” and “I want to go to there” to emerge as well as incredibly funny memorable quotes that make me fall in love with each and every character. I have never forgotten Jenna Maroney’s explaining to Liz Lemon the definition of love: “Love is wearing makeup to bed. And going downstairs to Burger King to poop.” I can’t wait to see the pearls of wisdom that the characters of UKS will impart to us.
Ellie Kemper
Just when I thought my heart was already too full of love for all the regular characters on The Office, Ellie Kemper snuck in during the fifth season and made me fall in love all over again. Then I laughed even harder and loved her even more as the sweetly clueless and innocent wedding party friend in Bridesmaids. Based on the premise of UKS, which is about a girl who is rescued from a doomsday cult after fifteen years of membership, I can’t imagine anyone better suited to play a comedic role that simultaneously embodies charming naïveté with the strength of character to survive the craziest of circumstances in New York City.
Super Fun Guest Stars
If precedent can be trusted, this Tina Fey show will not only introduce us to beloved guest stars, but repeatedly bring them back on for later episodes in unexpected and funny ways. It may be hard to top Chris Parnell’s Dr. Spaceman, but I have faith that this show will continually surprise us in the best possible ways when it comes to casting and recurring guest characters.
Titus Burgess
Titus is an amazingly multi-talented guy who has been on Broadway in shows like Jersey Boys, The Little Mermaid, and Guys and Dolls. Just this year Stephen Sondheim himself gave Titus permission to play the role of the Witch in a production of Into The Woods at the Carnival Studio Theater in Miami. If you’re not a theater buff you will most likely remember him as the wonderfully amusing D’Fwan, part of Tracy Jordan’s wife’s entourage on 30 Rock. I could not be more excited to be able to (binge!) watch more of this funny guy on UKS.
Tina Fey
The most obvious reason of all. I mean, does Tina even sleep? Or does she just stay awake all hours of the day and night to churn out incredible entertainment for us to watch? When Tina is involved with a project, you know immediately that it will have interesting roles for women, men and possibly even a circus animal or two. Her work ethic as well as her talent is enviable, so I expect that UKS will once again prove to the world why she’s one of the coolest, smartest women in show business.
