Why everyone is talking about this trailer for “Loving”
In a summer full of blockbuster sequels and remakes, it’s not only a relief, but downright heartwarming, to see a trailer for a small, quiet film that carries for more of an emotional punch. The latest trailer to do so would be the one for Jeff Nichols‘ film Loving, which earned accolades this year at Cannes Film Festival. And now, with the first trailer, we can all see why:
Considering the horrible reports of police brutality and racism that have ravaged our social media and news these past few months, this movie is strangely prescient. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga star as the Richard and Mildred Loving, a real-life couple who were married in Washington, D.C. in 1958 only to be arrested for violating Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law. The Lovings spent close to a decade fighting for their right to live as a family, ultimately taking their civil-rights case to the Supreme Court. Because of the couple’s persistence, the Supreme Court invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage in 1967.
The film has earned almost universal acclaim since its premiere. Peter Debruge writes for Variety:
