Eva Mendes opens up about the beautiful reason she named her daughter Amada

Eva Mendes is almost as notorious for her incredible onscreen talent and presence as she is for her privacy. The actress and her famous longtime partner, Ryan Gosling, very rarely share details about their personal lives with the rest of the world, despite the fact that we all desperately want to know (because seriously, they’re beautiful and amazing and why won’t they just let us live with them already?).

But Mendes opened up big time in a recent interview, sharing some intimate details of the personal life she so often avoids talking about. While talking to Latina magazine, Mendes was asked about her second child that she and Gosling  quietly welcomed into this world earlier this year.

“My older little girl is not yet 2 years old. My little one is still an infant, and right now it’s really about surviving those nights and trying to enjoy this time as much as possible with them, and start the bond between Esmeralda and Amada,” she explained. “It’s a really, really special time. I’m loving it.”

That’s when Mendes went on to explain exactly why they named their new little bundle of joy Amada Lee, a name she actually shares with her older sister, Esmeralda Amada. Mendes explained that the name “Amada” originally comes from her grandmother, and that it just felt right to use it for BOTH their daughters.

“We had a few names picked out for our new baby, and when she was born, we didn’t feel like those names were her… we just kept going back to Amada.”

She had to explain to Gosling that it’s extremely common to reuse names in Latin culture, which made it easy to settle on the name they felt like was right in the first place.

“So we went with Amada because it was something we kept going back to…We thought how beautiful to go with what made us emotional and with what felt like her. When we looked at her, we thought, ‘Aww, Amadita.’”

Knowing the story behind this name (and the thoughtfulness behind the beautiful parents who picked it) makes us feel very “Awwwwww,” too.
