Erykah Badu is donating her concert proceeds to help rape survivors

Singer and all-round badass Erykah Badu always impresses us, whether it’s her cover of Kanye West’s “Real Friends” or her tribute to Prince. Now she’s outdone herself by announcing that she will donate some of the proceeds from her upcoming concert in Detroit to the African American 490 Challenge; an organization created by black women volunteers in Detroit, dedicated to processing rape kits and bringing justice to sexual assault survivors.

According to Okayplayer, Badu will donate $5 from every ticket sale to the 490 Challenge, as well as proceeds from a $100 per-ticket reception, and the $1,000 per-ticket VIP reception. This enormously generous gesture will allow for the 490 Challenge to rigorously test more rape kits, each of which costs $490 to process (hence the name).

Donations like these are critical to help survivors in the Detroit area get justice after more than 11,000 untested rape kits were found in a police storage locker, put there because there was simply no money to test them. And so, these women and men have had to wait to get their day in court.

Kim Trent is the President of the 490 Challenge, and she acknowledged Badu in a statement. “It should come as no surprise that an artist with Erykah Badu’s impressive history of social consciousness would join forces with the black women leaders of Detroit to address this important social issue,” she said.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy also weighed in, “”Everyone knows that Erykah Badu is a major, major talent in the music and songwriting industry. For her to lend her name, talent and time to this work is nothing short of a miracle. Justice for these forgotten sexual assault victims has been given a phenomenal assist.”

Good on you, Erykah! You’re making us proud.
