Eric Garner’s 24-year-old daughter stages an incredibly powerful die-in
On Thursday night, Eric Garner’s daughter, Erica Garner, staged a “die-in” at the very spot her father was killed this summer. With die-ins becoming a symbol of global protests against a grand jury’s decision not to indict the police officer responsible for killing Eric Garner, Erica’s protest is the most powerful one yet.
The ultimate point of a die-in is for protesters to grab the attention of passersby and bring attention to their cause by obstructing pathways to walk and drive, and feigning “dead” on the ground. After a Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict on December 3, protesters across the country have used die-ins to peacefully demonstrate against the decision.
Erica Garner led a protest last night in Staten Island as she lay in the same spot her father was taken down by police officers earlier this year. The 24-year-old has vowed to lead protests at least twice a week in Staten Island. At a time when a grieving daughter could understandably remain silent in attempts to heal, it is incredibly moving to watch Garner be active and use her story and the memory of her father to peacefully fight for all black lives.
