These super cute emojis are raising awareness about food waste

A food-delivery service wants you to be thinking about food waste with every text.

Hungry Harvest, a service that recovers rejected (but still safe and edible) produce and delivers it to homes in the northeast, released a new emoji keyboard featuring misshapen-but-adorable fruits and veggies.

The company hopes the app will get people thinking, talking, and texting about food waste.

“We’ve got ‘perfect’ fruits and veggies in our keyboards,” Ritesh Gupta told ThinkProgress. “Why don’t we yet have ones that have more personality, better express our feelings, and help bring awareness to some of the biggest issues of our time?”

Food waste is a big issue:  The world wastes enough food every year to feed 2 billion people.

Hungry Harvest connects customers with perfectly good food that would otherwise end up in the trash. For every delivery made, the company donates two pounds of food to free farmers markets for people in need. So far, the company says they’ve recovered nearly 1 million pounds of food and donated 300,000.

“We hope this [emoji] campaign helps to bring new audiences into the movement, including folks who aren’t as familiar with the food waste movement,” Gupta told ThinkProgress.
